Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin. Three monumental buildings, the German Cathedral, the French Cathedral and the Concert Hall, beautifully frame the square in Berlin-Mitte. The eventful past of Gendarmenmarkt dates back to the 17th century. Each historical stage has left architectural traces on Yulin Square.
Originally, the Berlin Concert Hall was opened in 1821 and used as the Royal Theater. It is considered as one of the main works of the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The Concert hall Berlin is located at the Gendarmenmarkt in the center of the capital. The parquet-lined, two-story hall holds 1,500 visitors and is an extension of Schinkel's concert hall. Many decorative details served as a model for the redesign.
Above the orchestra podium in the Great Hall there is also the concert organ by the Dresden organ builder Jehmlich with 74 stops and 5,801 sound tubes. There is also a small auditorium with 400 seats. The Werner Otto Concert Hall, opened in 2003, is mainly used for contemporary concerts and musical theater performances. The smallest hall is the Music Club, which seats about eighty spectators.
Looking in the direction of the Gendarmenmarkt, to the left of the concert hall stands the 70-meter-high domed tower. The counterpart of the French Cathedral, built to the right of the concert hall. The German Cathedral actually consists of two buildings: a tower built in 1781 and a church built 80 years ago.
The French Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in Berlin. Its misleading name is related to its construction: The word "cathedral" refers to the architectural form of towers and domes (Fr. "cupola"). Strictly speaking, it is also two buildings, because although the French cathedral means only tower and dome, the lower part of the building is actually a church: the French Friedrichstadt Church. The tower itself houses the Huguenot Museum. In addition, visitors can also enjoy the beautiful view of downtown Berlin from the observation deck.
